Sir, - Keith Moynes (October 5th) correctly identified a number of problem areas in O'Connell Street. It was for this very reason that Dublin Corporation, being aware of the declining appeal and status of the main street of our capital city, prepared an Integrated Area Plan. The time has come to bring about a situation where O'Connell Street is one of the most sought-after places in the city. This can only be achieved by addressing such issues as:
Buildings and their design and presentation.
Improvements to the public space.
Uses both in the buildings and on the street.
The creation of strong links to other key areas in the city.
We in Dublin Corporation are intent on bringing about that change. It is now time to get on with the job and make it happen. We are now taking action with a view to stopping the continuing decline of the street. Over the coming three to four years, some £40 million of public money will be spent in upgrading the area. This, together with proposed private sector development throughout the plan area, should see a complete turnabout in the regeneration of the street.
The successful regeneration of the street and its environs, however, will rest not only with the Corporation but ultimately will depend on a combined response from all those with an interest in the street.
I am confident that this response will be forthcoming and that it won't be too long before we have a main street of which we can all be proud. - Yours, etc.,
Ciaran McNamara, Project Manager, Dublin Corporation, Tara Street, Dublin 2.
