Madam, - Plans are being finalised in China for the Olympic torch to be carried to the top of Mount Everest. While this technical feat is meant to impress the world, it has a darker undertone.
Everest stands between the borders of Nepal and Tibet. Tibet was invaded by China in 1949 and remains under Chinese control. Chinese government policy has been brutal, with extreme human rights abuses and repression continuing today.
Throughout the occupation, the Tibetan government in exile has maintained a response of peaceful non-violence. The torch being taken to the top of Mount Everest is meant to consolidate final control over Tibet and to put the final nail in the coffin of one of the world's most remarkable cultures. - Yours, etc,
ISABELA BASOMBRIO HOBAN, Mayo Tibet Support Group, Snugboro, Castlebar, Co Mayo.
A Chara, - I congratulate German Chancellor Angela Merkel for meeting the Dalai Lama. It is now all too often that leaders of the West are afraid to meet this hugely important Tibetan leader due to the lure of big business from an undemocratic Chinese government. - Is mise,
