Olympic performance

Sir, – The British selected Team GB rather than Team UK for the Olympics

Sir, – The British selected Team GB rather than Team UK for the Olympics. Could this indicate a sidelining of Northern Ireland (UK includes both GB and NI). Perhaps we could place the “Welcome to Northern Ireland” signs on this side of the Border to express our welcome to Northern Ireland to come over.

Team All Ireland should make a hit at Rio. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – From watching the Olympics coverage on the BBC, I have noticed a trend among some British competitors. Instead of revelling in the fact that they won an Olympic medal, some competitors now apologise to their country during interviews for “letting the public down” by “only” getting a silver or bronze medal. Surely this is not in the spirit of the Games, to focus on the failure to achieve first place?

To enter the Olympics and qualify for the final is something to be respected in itself and to win a medal at all is outstanding, so please, stop apologising and be proud. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Notwithstanding the charm and commitment of the Irish Olympic boxers, could we instead invest financially and emotionally in a sport which doesn’t require hitting other people in the head as hard and as often as possible? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – As someone mildly amused and bewildered by the endless and repetitive coverage of an over-long and over-hyped sporting event in London, it would seem that if we were to win a gold medal for anything it would be for – as happened with the property bubble in the last decade – yet again running away with ourselves. – Yours, etc,
