PARADES, ORDERS AND RESIDENTS

Sir, - The majority of the people of Northern Ireland do not belong to the Loyal Orders, nor do they belong to resident associations of localities which object to the Loyal Orders marching through them. Yet we are all in danger of being dragged into bitter confrontation through failure to resolve the differences which keep the orders and the residents apart. The spirit of any genuine desire to compromise seems, sadly, lacking. Trust is at a premium and goodwill in short supply.

It would be strange indeed if all members of the Orange Order, or all members of residents' groups or associations, were of one mind on how to proceed and it would be no compliment to either if they were. There must surely be considerable scope for much more open discussion; otherwise, it is only possible to conclude that members feel too intimidated to speak their minds freely.

Therefore, let us urge the many long suffering citizens who do not belong to either the Loyal Orders or residents action groups, to appeal to both to enter into dialogue so that a better understanding might be reached in the hope that, in time, such may lead to an outcome with which we all can live. The silent majority, those outside orders and residents, have indeed a role to play through creating a better climate for such dialogue.

Where there are misconceptions, let them be laid to rest by dialogue; where real differences persist, let there be an accommodation. There would seem to be much to talk about; the sooner such dialogue starts in earnest, the better. Yours, etc.,
