Madam, - Parking meters, originally confined to our city centres, are now spreading into the suburbs so that business people in this area, for example, are forced to park in adjoining narrow roads, much to the annoyance of residents who find difficulty in driving through the confined road space or exiting from their houses.
For some, following the NIMBY principle, the answer is to install more meters and yellow lines, so the invaders have to park elsewhere. Unfortunately, this tends to destroy the character of the road and encourage speeding and is certainly no help to the business community.
It is a situation that benefits nobody, except Dublin City Council which often uses the extra meter revenue to make life more difficult for motorists. Surely there is a better solution to the problem, since installing more meters only exacerbates things.
What about using the revenue from motorists to build or subsidise non-profit-making multi-storey car parks in the suburbs where motorists could park during the day at low cost? - Yours, etc,
REDMOND HOLLOWAY, Farney Park, Sandymount, Dublin 4.
