Sir, – Anytime that the government, national or local, tries to do anything to disturb a status quo that largely prioritises private motor traffic through the city, they are met with criticism from traders such as the members of Dublin Can Be Heaven and exaggerated portents of doom that all commercial activity in the city centre will collapse. Unfortunately, on many occasions these people get their way. Rather than being a "a facile and ultimately useless exercise" (Letters, August 17th), I think criticism of those who obstruct the development of the city in a sustainable way and the provision of appropriate infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists is quite a worthy endeavour. – Yours, etc,
