Sir, – It is perhaps opportune in the week that post codes are introduced that I make the following observation.
On a recent trip to the west, I was somewhat surprised to notice that “they” had changed the spelling of Lahinch, Co Clare, to Lehinch.
Today I saw a sign in Wicklow saying “Pollaphouca”, whereas I always knew it as “Poulaphouca”, and my late father used often bring us to Sligo, through the village of “Ballisodare”, which is now known as “Ballysadare”.
What I would like to know who “they” are and why they take it upon themselves to change the older, more beautiful names of the towns and villages of Ireland? – Yours, etc,
