Plan for IMF protests

Madam, – I am greatly heartened to read (Home News, June 16th) about the planned demonstrations against the visit of the IMF. I have long been calling these representatives of the faceless conglomerates “loan sharks” like those who surface mostly at Christmas time in places such as Drimnagh and Crumlin. I was also heartened, finally, to see the phrase (“loan-sharking”) used by Fintan O’Toole (Opinion, June 7th), regarding the EU-IMF arrangement.

It has taken a long time for the proper language about these people to be used. I hope the Irish people come out in their thousands for this worthwhile and important issue, like they did for the circus in College Green for Barack Obama.

The IMF and the rest of the economic right-wing are peddling a philosophy that keeps Irish citizens locked into a jail of economic servitude. The people of Greece have had enough of this theft of their right to a proper standard of living and education; Spain is waking up also. So let’s see Ireland lead the way. People should come out and demonstrate their opposition to these economic tyrants. – Yours, etc,
