Sir, – Further to "First marriage of man with two wives is recognised", June 16th), I can see recognition of polygamy becoming an issue in Irish society over the coming years. We will be torn between our desire to satisfy a vocal minority and the desire to maintain the status quo.
In many ways, it will be a reflection of the gay marriage debate. We will be told we must respect diverse lifestyles, and respect religious views, etc. We will fudge the equality issue by declaring that a woman is as entitled to have three husbands as a man is entitled to have three wives.
Eventually we will have bisexual people, each with two husbands and two wives.
And the progeny of these arrangements will, of course, be born in the new pluralist National Maternity Hospital. – Yours, etc,
Canon JAMES MORIARTY,
Dublin 4.
