Sir, – This week I paid out €170 to repair a car wheel and get a new tyre after a night-time encounter with a huge pothole on a Christmas trip to my native Co Limerick. By the way, this was not a legacy of any recent flooding. At the weekend, I encountered a necklace of new potholes near Brittas Bay in Co Wicklow, which is certainly a result of the flooding crisis.
Of course, local authorities have to give priority to saving people and their homes, but another important issue must be repairing severely damaged secondary roads all over the country. This is not merely an issue of costly damage to cars, but is an important road safety issue. – Yours, etc,
STEPHEN O’BYRNES,
Dublin 4.
