Praise for health service

Sir, – There is much negative comment about the HSE of late but I wish to relate a positive experience.

My father died last week after a long struggle against cancer. He was a public patient, and from his first engagement with the health service to his last day alive, he was cared for with great attention, kindness and dignity.

I wish to thank and commend the people who work in our health services, for indeed they are selfless and dedicated people. I include the good people working in the Fair Deal scheme, who ensured my father had a comfortable final year of life.

I am indebted to all the wonderful friends he made in the nursing care home for the happiness he enjoyed as a resident.

We are well served by our HSE, in my opinion, and despite the failings, I think the successes should also be acknowledged. – Yours, etc,
