Madam, – Fintan O’Toole’s interesting article on commemorating the 1916 Rising (Weekend Review, April 23rd) makes no mention of the official symbol of the Rising’s 50th anniversary, namely a stylised design of “The Sword of Light”/“An Claidheamh Soluis” for which my late sister, artist Una Watters, received an award from the Arts Council in 1965.

The symbol chosen can be seen as another example of the use of ancient mythology in telling the story of 1916.

Sadly, the award came to her home on the same day that her coffin left it for burial in Ballinasloe, Co Galway following her untimely death at the age of 47. – Yours, etc,
