Sir, – How clearly President Michael D Higgins puts the case for the urgent need for a restructuring of the European institution ("President criticises EU for 'narrow' economic policies", News, March 29th).
He has displayed true leadership in speaking out at the failures of Europe to address societal, economic, cultural and ethical needs. It is regrettable that such frankness is so lacking among Ministers.
Let us hope that his latest speech will serve as a catalyst to promote genuine discussion of how to improve the current conditions in Ireland and other European countries.
As evidenced by Brexit, never has there been a greater disconnect between the EU bureaucratic machine and the daily lives of European citizens. – Yours, etc,
