Sir, – One day last week, a sports reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live pronounced Chile as “Chee-lay” and was at great pains to explain that he had done so because he felt it appropriate to say it how the locals would. All very commendable, if a little unnecessary.
The next day, a different sports reporter on the same station told us of the cancellation of Chelsea’s friendly soccer match against “Drog-heeda”.
If only he had had some way of finding out how the locals pronounce it!
