Proposals for political consensus

Madam, – Ed Walsh (Opinion, October 8th) is absolutely correct in his view that we now need a national government. His comments, as well as those made by Peter Sutherland to the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, make sense, demonstrate leadership thinking and point the way forward. I particularly welcome his suggestion of bringing outstanding talent to government from outside the Oireachtas. Have our politicians of all parties, and none, the common sense to respond positively to these suggestions? – Yours, etc,

PAUL WILLIAMS,

Hermitage Grove,

Rathfarnham,

Dublin 16.

Madam, – I enthusiastically support the Green proposal for the establishment of an all-party forum to discuss a four-year plan (Front page, October 8th). I go further to suggest a democratically mandated forum, to be called the 31st Dáil Éireann. I am ready to play my part at the polling booth at a moment’s notice. – Yours, etc,

STEPHEN BARRETT,

De Vesci Hill,

Abbeyleix, Co Laois.

Madam, – Having rejected and dismissed the Opposition policies and advice to confront the crisis since its outset, the Government parties now call on Opposition parties to join them to rectify the continuing chaos they oversaw and created over recent years. I see this as a cynical last-ditch attempt by Fianna Fáil and the Greens to stay in power and and also to claw back their flagging public support by using the “patriotism” card. Opposition beware! The country must vote first. – Yours, etc,

MARTIN KRASA,

Sunday’s Well Road,

Cork.
