Sir, – Fr John Joe Duffy’s excellent contribution (April 4th) should have reasonance for Government policy-makers and points a way forward out of the morass of confused political thinking with respect to progressing educational opportunity within the Republic.

Confidence-building measures, parity of esteem and equality for all is what we demand in the six counties, but here in the Republic a different policy seems to be pursued. Protecting Protestant schools and their ethos contributes to cherishing all the children of the nation as envisaged by the founders of the State. Perhaps we in the Republic should consider emulating the example of our brethren in Northern Ireland? – Yours, etc,
