Sir, Having heard me talk to Pat Kenny about racism and my three adopted children of Peruvian origin, your radio reviewer seems to have reckoned I was merely deflecting racism away from my own family and towards other adult immigrants. Nothing could be further from the truth. I abhor all racism.
The core stupidity in all racism is the confusion of race, a genetic inheritance, with culture, a developed set of loyalties, values, relationships and language. We are born with our racial characteristics we learn our culture. A Chinese baby is not born with a yen to join a triad or run a restaurant, as some of Pat's callers seemed to assume.
An adult immigrant can choose to become immersed in the new culture, or retain his or her culture of origin. Countries can choose, too, how multi-cultural they wish to become. But these issues of culture, subculture and immigration have nothing at all to do with adoption. Yours, etc.,
