Referendum on children's rights

Sir, – I believe it is important that the Constitution should protect the rights of the child

Sir, – I believe it is important that the Constitution should protect the rights of the child. The rights of the family and the individual will still be protected under the Constitution. We must protect the children of our nation. They are the future. This referendum will protect the rights of the child. I will be voting Yes. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – The Independent Guide to the Children’s Referendum arrived through the letter box this morning. I found it clear and convincing. At last, I though, children’s rights are to be defined in the Constitution. But no; it seems that these rights are not be identified in the proposed new article or underwritten by the Dáil.

That essential function is to be fulfilled through the gradual accrual of random judgments from the courts over an open-ended period of time. How can vagueness be “imprescriptable”? It’s hard to see Article 42A as anything other than a legislative cop-out. A pity. I would have voted for it. – Yours, etc,
