Sir, – Whatever checks and balances would be needed in a new and united Ireland, a new electoral system is not among them (June 26th).
We would simply continue to use the proportional representation single transferable vote system, as Northern Ireland’s electors do for the Assembly and the European Parliament elections. This assumes that Northern Ireland would no longer send MPs to Westminster, using the “first past the post” system which disenfranchises so many. – Yours, etc,
DONAL Ó BROLCÁIN,
Dublin 9.
Sir, – A “new and united Ireland” will need a capital city, but where should it be? Dublin? Belfast? Armagh? Athlone? Cork? Derry? – Yours, etc,
GRAEME GUTHRIE,
Kilmeena,
Westport,
Co Mayo.
Sir, – It might be a better use of time to reimagine the United Kingdom. – Yours, etc,
MARY BYRNE,
Bray,
Co Wicklow.
