Sir, – When, some time ago, I wrote a review for Caroline Walsh that was potentially controversial, she was enormously supportive, firstly, in printing the review in full, and secondly, in standing over the piece when a certain amount of controversy did indeed arise.

Once she had decided that you were the person for the job, Caroline’s faith in her reviewers was total; she got the best out of them, not through dragooning or pressure, but through reposing such enormous confidence and trust in them that one felt morally obliged to try to live up to this degree of belief.

Caroline’s enthusiasm, commitment and energy were infectious. These, combined with her remarkably sure literary instincts, helped to make her an outstanding Literary Editor by any criteria. Her loss, both personally and professionally, is incalculable. – Yours, etc,
