Sir, - Thousands of tonnes of food aid are now being rushed to Afghanistan and there is music in the streets. Where now the bleeding hearts who demanded a halt to the bombing in order to allow food aid in? The Taliban stopped the UN food aid efforts and looted the stores. If lorries of food aid had gone in during a "cessation of the bombing campaign" the drivers would have risked their lives and lorries would have been stolen along with the food.
Mary Robinson, high commissioner to the UN, was the first bleeding heart I heard to call for a cessation. It makes you wonder if the UN has the people or judgment to be involved in a post-Taliban role in the country. - Yours, etc.,
Joss Fitzsimons, St Margaret Street, George's Quay, Cork.
