Madam, - In 1978, the British embassy in Dublin noted that Ireland suffered from a potent inferiority complex towards Britain in (The Irish Times December 31st).

That would certainly explain why so many Irish institutions retain the word "royal" in their titles - eg, the Royal Irish Yacht Club, the Royal Dublin Society, the Royal College of Surgeons, Royal Dublin Golf Club, etc.
