Sir, - I welcome the establishment of the Three Rivers Project which aims to rid the rivers Liffey, Boyne and Suir of pollution.

I make one further appeal to the Minister to ban the use of phosphate-based detergents, which are a contributory factor to water pollution. Alternative phosphate-free products are now readily available.

Banning phosphate-based detergents would help to reduce the level of pollution in all our rivers and do for water quality what Mary Harney did for air quality, when she had the courage to ban smoky coal in Dublin.

Do we have to wait until all our rivers are open sewers before the Minister takes action? - Yours, etc.,
