Sir, - I was delighted to read in The Irish Times (August 22nd), that the Rose of Tralee Festival is not receiving a penny from Bord Fβilte this year.
This dreadful cattle market belongs to the "Quiet Man" era of Irish tourism and should not be supported by public funds. There are so many more worthy festivals all over the country at this time of year.
Surely, if funding is a problem, this ghastly contest could be transferred to its natural home among the Irish-Americans in Boston or New York. Then the rest of us could settle down to our Fr Ted videos; especially the "Lovely Girls" episode. - Yours, etc.,
MR. ┴innle O'Nelll, Templeogue, Dublin 6W.
