Madam, - Like Luke Kehoe (November 14th), I too have been following the Irish rugby team for nearly 31 years and I too would like to commend The Irish Times on its excellent coverage of the World Cup. It's a pity the same can't be said of our State-owned broadcaster.
I agree with the assessment that Geordan Murphy, one of our most exciting players, and Denis Hickie were missed. However, I don't think the back row would have performed any better with the inclusion of either Wallace or Quinlan. Indeed we are fortunate to have such a collection of excellent loose forwards to choose from.
I would disagree with the assertion that we fielded a severely weakened team against France. We were missing only two star players: does this constitute a severe weakening? This statement is an injustice to the likes of the outstanding Paul O'Connell (my Irish player of the tournament) and the legendary Keith Wood, to mention but two.
Irish rugby can indeed be proud of the team's performance in this world cup. This achievement is not down solely to the management and players but in no small part to the contribution, enthusiasm and sheer professionalism of all the people at HQ (too many to mention) whose tireless work and commitment to their jobs makes success possible.
Finally, a parting word to Keith Wood. Thanks for the memories. You will be missed on the field. - Yours, etc.,
COLIN PHILLIPS, Meadowmount, Churchtown, Dublin 16.
