Sir, - Why, in this age of progress, do we have to depend on sleek, new ferries, which deposit us in Holyhead in two hours (if we are lucky) and which appear to be non-functioning if the weather is bad?

Fifty years ago, the SS Princess Maude and her contempories undertook the journey in four hours, regardless of the weather. One could avail of a cabin and sleep on board until 8 am. and then enjoy a leisurely breakfast either on the boat or the train, arriving at one's destination quite refreshed.

The old mail boats my have been slower, but like the tortoise versus the hare, they did get you there! They were reliable and never let you down.
