Salads – take it outside

Sir, – What we once understood by the word “salad” has turned into what is merely a bit of lettuce with a dressing poured over it. Gone are the days when salad meant lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, scallions, ham or chicken, potatoes or a hard-boiled egg. Now if you are asked “Would you like salad with that?”, what is really meant is “Would you like a heap of lettuce with that?”

I for one am thrilled if I see half of a cherry tomato peeping out through all that foliage, and if I see a slice of cucumber, I think it’s my birthday! Bring back the salads of yesteryear, or please don’t call them salads. – Yours, etc,
