Madam, – It is unfortunate that Muireann Lynch (August 31st) appears to have missed the point of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland’s instruction to its members in relation to class size. It is potentially detrimental to students to be taught in overcrowded classes where both educational and health and safety issues are at stake.

The purpose of the class size policy is not to make a point to Government but to seek to maintain this aspect of educational quality in the teacher’s own classroom.

This is a policy which puts students first. – Yours, etc,

PETER MacMENAMIN,

General Secretary,

Teachers’ Union of Ireland
