Madam, – As was pointed out by Siobhán Corry (August 11th), points for schools whose pupils go on to university, and extra points for UCD and Trinity, are ridiculously crude outcome measures. However, this points system is only used because there is insufficient useful information on the quality of schools. Transparent multi-dimensional assessment of education, which goes beyond crude exam results, is a prerequisite to ensure good practice is rewarded and bad practice is corrected.
Reform is now inevitable throughout the public service. Part of this reform should include levers for improvement to create an education system which better serves our economy, and more importantly, better serves our children. – Yours, etc,
