MICHAEL McGUIRE,
Sir - I refer to Dr William Reville's defence of religion and its relationship to science (Thursday June 13th).
I don't believe it is possible to apply scientific principles to religion. Science is about proof and once you have proof there is no need for faith and then there is no genuine religion.
Let's apply some logic and scientific methods to religious matters and see what happens. Dr Reville says: "The creator is rational. . ." To paraphrase Nietzsche: God so loved the world that he gave his only son, an innocent man in the place of every guilty one. How rational is that?
Dr Reville states: "We cannot prove or disprove the existence of God." The fact that we cannot disprove the existence of God proves nothing. We also cannot disprove that our domestic cats are watching our behaviour and telepathically reporting back to their masters on the planet Zog.
Logic and science would say that unless there is evidence to believe in something then we shouldn't believe in it. Religion, on the other hand, praises those who have not seen and yet believe. - Yours, etc.
