Seanad election paradox

Sir, – Due to my Herculean efforts, I managed to obtain a pass degree in history and politics in UCD many years ago. As a reward, I am now a member of the very select electorate which has the privilege of voting in the election to Seanad Éireann.

Recently, in casting my vote, I was faced with the task of choosing from a list of some 30 candidates.

One of the criteria I used in making my choice was to exclude anybody who represented a party that campaigned in recent years for the abolition of the Seanad.

Is it not amazing that people who told us that the Seanad was “wasteful and undemocratic” are now traipsing around the country asking to be elected to that august institution? Was there ever such a paradox? – Yours, etc,
