Madam, - Danny Morrison (March 8th) writes that Fintan O'Toole misses the point in his column of February 21st ("Leave Jerry McCabe in peace").
While he rightly points out the hypocritical dithering by all the political parties on this issue, I suggest that Danny Morrison also misses the point or is blinkered by his own ideology.
He gives us a history lesson on previous atrocities and points to the pain endured by nationalist families in the North as loyalist killers were released in the interest of peace. I agree that such releases must have been very difficult for families on both sides in Northern Ireland.
However, the killing of Jerry McCabe had nothing to do with the struggle for freedom, civil rights, political oppression, a united Ireland or anything for the "cause" .
His killers were just low-life criminals robbing a bank for their own benefit and using the IRA as a flag of convenience. What do they know or care about peace except for cynically using the peace process as a means to freedom?
They should serve their sentences in full an all political leaders and parties should ensure they do. - Yours, etc,
BOBBY McMAHON, Beauparc, Slane, Co Meath.
