Sir, – Your warm editorial tribute to the Bard of Avon, “William Shakespeare: celebrating his 450th birthday” (April 16th), was read with puzzlement in his home town, where we have spent the day commemorating his death 400 years ago.
In the words of Hermione in A Winter's Tale, "You did mistake."
To mark Shakespeare’s actual 450th birthday (in 2014), President Michael D Higgins visited his birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon and spoke at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
But, in words that have come into the language from All's Well That Ends Well, "I have forgiven and forgotten all." – Yours, etc,
