Sir, – Bernadette Edgeworth (August 9th) states that it is hard to believe that hunger exists in our world today, and asks whether we can “come up with suggestions about what can be done?”
The short answer is Yes. If we wish to end this hunger and suffering we must invest in farming.
Some 80 per cent of people in sub-Saharan Africa rely on farming for their survival, and most of the 80 million small farms across the continent have a mid- to high-potential for increased productivity. Improving farming systems has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty in Asia, South America and Africa heretofore, and further support for this sector will end hunger for tens of millions more in Africa in the years to come. – Yours, etc,
