Sporting anthem wake-up call

Sir, – As any international rugby competition hoves into view, so too the letters from correspondents whose love of the game is so overwhelming that they have apparently not noticed, until now, that the Irish Rugby team uses Ireland’s Call. Their feigned shock and faux outrage demand justice immediately, if not sooner.

To answer some of the most recent nonsensical points: Forcing a choice on people to march for Tricolour or Union Jack is the very opposite of inclusiveness, not the definition; the Republic of Ireland may indeed be a secular republic, the United Kingdom is not; there is no “Team GB” waiting with open arms to accept those fine athletes whose love for their country and its tradition would mean they would have grave difficulty marching under the flag and anthem of another. – Yours, etc,
