Stadium Ireland

Sir, - Your report on the Government's plan for a national stadium (The Irish Times, January 27th) is worrying. It appears that we will have three stadiums - Stadium Ireland, Eircom Park and an enlarged Croke Park - costing a total of between £400 million and £500 million.

Since it is clear that only one stadium is actually needed, and two would be more than adequate, the third one seems like a waste of money.

Surely there are other equally valid projects. For example, most major cities have a major science park, a planetarium, ample concert halls and fine art galleries, all of which Ireland could do with more of. In particular, Dublin, the capital of a technologically aware nation, is a disgrace on the world stage when it comes to showcasing science. It has been demonstrated in cities from San Francisco to London to Paris that science parks aimed at the general public and children are hugely successful. With vision, we could have the best of both worlds: a single new stadium of world standing, as well as another venture such as a major science park, new art gallery or concert hall. - Yours, etc.,
