A Chara, - The recent "Look West" campaign has depicted Dublin in a very negative light, implying that the capital to be unsafe, expensive, unhealthy and impersonal. These advertisements are aimed at those who might consider moving to rural Ireland, but they are undermining widespread attempts to inspire pride among young Dubliners.

We certainly have problems in Dublin, which are indicative of a society that is one of the most unequal in the world. However we also have so much to be proud of, from architecture to literature, from native wit to an unrivalled community spirit throughout the city. Our Gaelic Football team can be a unifying force this summer to help us all display the pride we Dubliners have in our native city.

Ahead of this Sunday's Leinster Final I am urging all Dubliners to redress the balance and to show the pride they have in their city. The World Cup has shown us how sport can unite a people and provide a positive distraction to everyday life and this Sunday offers a perfect opportunity to follow that example.

I am asking all Dubliners, especially young Dubliners, to hang Dublin colours from their homes, cars and offices. The City Council has taken the lead by flying Dublin flags from the Liffey flagpoles, let all Dubs follow that example and hang out our colours with pride. - Is mise,
