Sir, – It is with profound disgust that I have read about the proposal to film another episode of Star Wars on Skellig Michael ("Star Wars filming may return to Skellig Michael", June 9th). It is to the shame of our politicians and others approving of this venture that they are prepared to put this vulnerable monument to further risk. The demand for an environmental impact statement is to be welcomed but surely it would be preferable to cancel the filming and restrict it to film studios. – Yours, etc,
AISLING LAW,
Rossnaree, Co Meath.
Sir, – Why should the Bible's God of Skellig Michael bow yet again to Disney's and the country's god of mammon to enable filming of another Star Wars episode, so inimical to the peace and tranquillity of ancient monks and modern birds?
Let the Government inform Unesco this time around to prevent pagan desecration of this sacred isle where, in the words of Kenneth Clarke's Civilisation "western Christianity survived by clinging on to places like Skellig Michael". – Yours, etc,
PETER HARBISON,
Skerries,
Co Dublin.
