Madam, - Maev-Ann Wren says many good things in her series in The Irish Times but the Monaghan Community Alliance will never agree with her conclusion that hospitals like Monaghan should be run on a day-basis. She has joined the ranks of those who have decided on an acceptable morbidity and mortality rate for the people of Monaghan and other rural communities.

We agree with centres of excellence, though we say every hospital should be one, but they are of little use in an emergency if the patient cannot get to one of these major centres until two hours after the emergency arises. Has the "Golden Hour" been totally abolished? Perhaps Maev-Ann could tell us what price she puts on our lives, and does she put the same price on all citizens of this State? - Yours, etc.,

PEADAR MCMAHON, Chairman, Monaghan Community Alliance, Mullan Road, Emyvale, Co. Monaghan.
