Sir, –
Derek Scally’s article (Opinion, August 17th) on the Franco-German summit confirms a very disconcerting trend away from Irish independence and towards a dangerous dilution of our sovereignty. If Irish people are not vigilant it will not be long before Ireland is a mere outlying province of a Franco-German economic empire. Regardless of the situation Ireland finds itself in, its sovereignty and independence must always remain non-negotiable.
The following quote by US civil rights and civil liberties lawyer Wendell Willkie (1892-1944) should be borne in mind at this time:
“As citizens, we must fight, in their incipient stages, all movements by government or party or pressure groups that seek to limit the legitimate liberties of any of our fellow citizens.” – Yours, etc,
Sir, – Given the history of previous attempts at European domination by both France and Germany, can we expect to be invading Russia any time soon? Maybe not during winter this time. – Yours, etc,
