Sir, – Justin Egan’s call (August 1st) for litter bins to be placed near the playground in Kilmore Quay is understandable, but does not address the fundamental problem of litter in our public places.
The main issue is to educate individuals not to litter in the first place.
Here in Britain legislation introducing on-the-spot fines for littering has gone some way to alleviating the problem, but a problem there still is.
The issue of people dropping litter is a global phenomenon. From the paths in the Andes to the trails in the Himalayas, cans and plastic bottles can be seen discarded in your path.
The situation is somewhat different in Singapore, where draconian measures are in place to deter such behaviour. This is a remedy not available to some more liberal societies. – Yours, etc,
FRANK GREANEY, Lonsdale Road, Formby, Liverpool.
