Tailgating in the tunnel

Madam, – I have occasion to use the Port Tunnel about twice a week

Madam, – I have occasion to use the Port Tunnel about twice a week. Above all other places, careful driving is essential in the tunnel, and to that end the speed limit in the tunnel is 80k/ph.

Unfortunately, the motorists who comply with this rule are subjected to the most frightening stress. In the left lane, where the heavy goods vehicles are required to leave three chevron markings of space between them and the next vehicle, most of them rush up to tailgate anyone who has the temerity to stay at the proper speed limit.

To avoid this, I have moved to the right lane, and found to my dismay that the cars in that lane are equally unwilling to put up with those of us wishing to stay at 80k/ph.

Could anyone help me find a solution? It takes a lot of nerve to drive in the tunnel with someone 10ft behind me, flashing his or her lights. I have already been to the gardaí to report the worst offender but have heard nothing in reply. – Yours, etc,
