Sir, – So Property Industry Ireland calls for tax breaks and the abolition of development levies for landlord developers as a way of increasing housing supply (Opinion, October 23rd).
In other words Property Industry Ireland is calling on us, the tax payer, to subsidise developers. A more effective way to increase the supply and affordability of housing is to increase the supply of development land on to the market so tending to reduce its price.
Interestingly, Property Industry Ireland strongly opposed such a vacant land levy when proposed by the Lord Mayor of Dublin task force on vacant land set up by Oisín Quinn in 2013. – Yours, etc,
KIERAN ROSE
