Sir, – In response to Joe McCarthy's letter (July 3rd), with respect, I think he is missing the point. Has he never appreciated the importance of the micro to the macro, and that similar qualities are needed for both?
After all, to enter politics at all, with its insecure tenure and demanding nature, I would argue you have to be a person who has the desire to serve and change things at some level, if nothing else.The beauty of the democratic system is that people have a chance to grow into their role. Dealing with the many and complex issues at local level has to be a fitting apprenticeship for the right person to address the larger national and international issues. – Yours, etc,
