Sir, - The teachers are perfectly right to claim parity with the private sector. The surest way of securing it would be to have themselves transferred to that sector. The best way of doing that would be for the teachers in each school to be formed into a partnership or co-operative society.
The income of the teachers would then be the fees paid by the parents less expenses such as heating, lighting and maintenance. Everyone would benefit from such an arrangement. The teachers would enjoy all the advantages of the private sector. The pupils would enjoy the individual attention of the teachers who would no longer have to worry about parity. The taxpayers would enjoy the benefits of the huge savings that would accrue to the Exchequer. - Yours, etc.,
David O'Mahony, Sunday's Well Road, Cork.
