Sir, - Your editorial (May 18th) championing the Adelaide Hospital Society's submission to the Government's Working Group is puzzling. You describe it as "humane, charitable and respectful of the individual conscience and integrity of each woman burdened by a crisis pregnancy". Then follows a gratuitous attack on all those who presumably would not agree. Their views are dismissed as "insensitive bellowings". By so demonising your opponents, you have already polarised the debate and poisoned the air, well before any reasonable public debate can take place. And you will no doubt call anyone who dares to argue against you as being divisive, irrational, and lacking respect for your conscience. Perhaps you might be so humane and reasonable as to show some respect for the good conscience and sound reason of the majority of Christians living on this island - Catholic and Protestant - who beg to disagree with you. - Yours, etc., Vincent Twomey,Lecturer in,Moral Theology,St. Patrick's College,Maynooth,Co Kildare.
