The Brexit campaign

Sir, – James Kenny (June 9th) says that the British feel themselves to be superior and a cut above the rest of Europe.

I am reminded of Cecil Rhodes, regarded in his time as a great Englishman, who took the view that the English were the first race in the world and felt that “the more of the world we inhabit the better it is for the human race”. However, he is perhaps most famous for having said, “Remember that you are an Englishman, and have consequently won first prize in the lottery of life.”

Is, as your correspondent suggests, the spirit of Cecil Rhodes alive and well in the Brexit camp? – Yours, etc,
