Sir, - Just a note by way of correcting an error. Your EL section of April 24th carried an interview with Royston Brady, Dublin's Deputy Lord Mayor, on his early days in St Joseph's Secondary School in Fairview. In the course of the interview, Mr Brady had some very complimentary things to say about his maths teacher, whom he termed "the writer John Banville".
Now, John Banville has many achievements to his name, but teaching maths to Royston Brady is not one of them. Rather was his maths teacher "the writer Vincent Banville". In fact, me.
Let me hasten to add that it is not personal vanity that has caused me to pen this note, but the hope that when Mr Brady becomes Lord Mayor and decides to confer the freedom of the city on his old maths teacher, it will be me he chooses, rather than the other fellow. - Yours, etc.,
Vincent Banville, New Cabra Road, Dublin 7.
