Madam - Thanks to Frank McNally for his vision of getting Irish pubs accorded World Heritage status, but I must challenge his reference to a pint's head "depth" (Feb 26th).
Some may say that this is simply a) a revised version of whether a glass is half full or half empty, or b) that depth is equal and opposite to height.
I beg to differ.
Depth in my thesaurus includes abyss and deepness, conjuring up images of dark ocean trenches, touching the void etc, whereas height includes loftiness, stature, pinnacle, and dignity ie, all the correct connotations for a Guinness pint and its head.
Can I implore Frank to use more positive statements in future before he approaches Unesco headquarters on this matter. - Yours, etc,
JOHN RISELEY,
Coundon Court,
Killiney,
Co Dublin.
