The final whistle?

Sir, – Is the practice of whistling now a bygone pastime? It would appear so; but why?

When I was growing up, whistling was a pretty cool thing to engage in; it was all the rage with the guys and gals of my generation. Indeed, in those less stressful times, one regularly heard happy-go-lucky individuals whistling Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf or the Colonel Bogey March as they went about their daily business. These days, nobody is inclined to whistle; they regard the once popular habit as anachronistic and passé; they much prefer to let their iPods play the tune note-perfect. I wouldn't mind but whistling is such an easy thing to do – "you just put your lips together and blow". – Yours, etc,
